 DISCIPLINE IN HIGH SCHOOL

The focus of this workshop is on strategies that promote effective high school discipline.  This workshop is not a legal update on disciplinary issues in education.  Instead it focuses on techniques that cope with the often conflicting demands of students who have attendance or behavioral problems, their parents, the dean's colleagues in the building and the senior administration.  Mr. Lawrence, a high school dean for 20 years in a diverse suburban high school, will offer guidelines for approaching the job, offering specific strategies when concerns about attendance or behavior are interfering with a student's learning.

Topics include:  • Language for policies and handbooks, • Developing a progression of consequences for various types of misbehavior, • Conducting effective meetings with parents and students, • Working with police liaison officers, and • Developing powers of observation that will make your school safer for students and staff.
